John R.
Shaw
Sep 18, 1935 — Jan 30, 2022
John Robert Shaw, age 86, formerly of Xenia, Ohio has dealt his last hand of poker. John passed away on January 30, 2022 at his residence in Union, KY after many years of health issues that never seemed to slow him down. He was born September 18, 1935 in Lebanon, OH to William and Mary (Gultice) Shaw.
John was a 1953 Graduate of Xenia High School and went to work after graduating at Dayton, Power and Light, Co as a meter reader. In 1955, he enlisted in the Army and doing his basic training at Fort Leonardwood, MO before being shipped out to Okinawa after the Korean War ended.
John returned to Xenia, OH and went back to his job at DP&L, eventually working up to First Class Lineman. He loved his job often being called out on holiday and weekends because he didn't want anyone to go without power. He volunteered for disasters in other states, never turning down work, especially in ice storms. He worked non-stop reconnecting power in Xenia, OH after the April 3, 1974 tornado.
John met and married Nancy Heaton in 1959 and honored their vows of "in sickness and in health" for 62 years. John was not one to sit still and engaged in many social activities, joining the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks as a young man and rising to Exalted Ruler. He remained a loyal member of the Elks for over 60 years. Any chance John had, he would end up on the golf course, a fishing trip or a winning Bowling Team. He and Nancy enjoyed traveling the USA with their 5 th Wheel R.V. group, eventually landing a second home in Ft. Myers, FL. After a career at DP&L spanning 45 years, he was still not ready to "sit still" so he enjoyed a second career at W. A. Hammond Drierite until the age of 84. He and Nancy then relocated to Kentucky to be near their daughters.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers William Shaw; Charles (Martha) Shaw and his Son-in-Law, Dr. George Barber. He is survived by his wife Nancy Heaton Shaw; Daughters Cheryl Shaw Barber of Versailles, KY and Jennifer (Chris) Paxson of Union, KY; Sister Carolyn (Carl) Elliott of Xenia; Sister-in-law Dorothy Shaw of Xenia, OH and grandchildren Eric Caudill of Versailles and Victoria Silvati of Indianapolis, IN and many nieces and nephews.
