Obituary

Mary Ann Stalter, age 91, passed away peacefully at her home on July 10, 2026.

Mary Ann was born on December 8, 1934, in Glouster, Ohio, Athens County, and was raised in Junction City, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Donald Francis Stalter (2022); her father, John Francis McGonagle (1937); her mother, Theodora Wilhelmina Hedfelt (1985); her brother, Richard John McGonagle (1986); and her sister, Patricia Vigue (2025).

She is lovingly remembered by her children, John (Lisa) Stalter, Donald Joseph (Regina) Stalter, and Ann Marie (Mark Justice); nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

After marrying, Don and Mary Ann left southeastern Ohio to begin their life together in Fairborn, Ohio, where they raised their three children. A second-generation college graduate, Mary Ann earned her Bachelor's degree in Education from Wright State University in 1973 and dedicated over 30 years to Beavercreek City Schools. She found great purpose in teaching, first serving students with special needs at Fairbrook Elementary School and later teaching grades two through five at Valley Elementary School. Her patience, encouragement, and genuine care for her students left a lasting impression on countless children and their families.

In 1995, following their retirement, Don and Mary Ann established a farm homestead in Xenia Township with their son John and daughter-in-law Lisa. Mary Ann devoted herself to caring for Don during his declining health and survived Stage IV colon cancer. She spent her remaining years on the farm she loved, enjoying country life, family, and the comfort of home.

A faithful member of St. Brigid Catholic Church, Mary Ann lived her faith through quiet acts of kindness, generosity, and devotion to her family.

As a child of the Great Depression, she carried throughout her life a spirit of resourcefulness, resilience, and quiet gratitude. A talented homemaker, she expressed her creativity through sewing and was an exceptional cook who delighted in preparing meals for her family. Some of her happiest moments were spent gathered around the table, watching loved ones enjoy the food she had lovingly prepared. She had a remarkable gift for listening, always making others feel heard and valued. Patient, kind, and generous, she shared her love freely, especially with babies, whom she cherished holding, cuddling, and caring for. As a devoted wife, loving mother, and treasured grandmother, she will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering compassion, and the countless ways she made a house feel like home and a family feel loved.

A private family service will be held at McColaugh Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Brigid Catholic Church, Fairgrounds Road, Xenia, on Monday, July 20th, at 11:00 AM.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the administration and compassionate caregivers of ComForCare Home Care and Crossroads Hospice for their professional oversight, devoted care, and kindness shown to Mary Ann over the past several years. Their support, compassion, and dedication brought comfort not only to Mary Ann but also to her entire family.
