Walfriede Elisabeth Gifford, age 88, of Xenia, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Legacy Village. She was born November 19, 1933 in Schweinfurt, Germany the daughter of Otto and Philippine (Kaupert) Rott.

In addition to her parents, Walfriede was preceded in death by her husband in 2020: Jerry Lee Gifford.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Elizabeth and William Trubee of Xenia; grandsons: Luke (Gretchen) Trubee and Nick (Lyndsey) Trubee; 4 great grandchildren: Brody, Mia, Graham and Miles; a sister: Anni Rott; brothers: Albin (Loretta) Rott and Peter Rott; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

When she was 17 years old, Walfriede came to New York to live with her aunt and uncle and escape the war torn German town and have an opportunity for a better life. Four years later she returned to Germany to visit her parents, and ironically met a handsome American soldier, Jerry Gifford. She returned to New York, and he stayed in Germany for his military deployment. After a long-distance courtship, they were married in 1956.  She was an accomplished seamstress, making her daughter's clothes and doll clothes without using a pattern. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She loved the outdoors and was known around Xenia as the "fast walking little German lady" who walked 7 miles a day for years.  She had been an active member of the St. Brigid Catholic Church, being part of the Bereavement Committee and Knights of Columbus, Ladies Auxiliary.

Graveside services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at St. Brigid Cemetery.
